Solidworks 2008/2009 space explorer jerk problem

Post by ericscottf »

Hi folks

I have a problem in SW2008/9 in SOME files. Sometimes when i go to move up and down (Z movement of the cap), and less frequently in other movements, the part flies off the screen or only moves a tiny bit, when it should be moving more.

This only happens in certain files, whose attributes i cannot see as being much different from other similar files that work fine.

It will always happen in the files it happens in, i can't get it to not happen or happen in files in which it does not.
If i create an assembly using the file, the assembly might work just fine.

I've reinstalled drivers and solidworks, no help there.

I'll try the files on a different PC to see what happens next.
Unfortunately, i can't share the files with others, so I'm hoping on the slim chance that someone else recognizes the problem i'm having and knows what i might do to fix it.

Regards,
Eric

Hi Eric,

What happens if you toggle the "Auto Rotation Center" and "Keep in View" options (3Dcontrol -> Properties) - does it make any difference?

Indeed I have played with those, to no avail.

Keep in mind that this problem happens on some files and not on others, and as best as i know, those settings are global and not stored in the files, correct?
I keep many solidworks parts open at the same time, ctrl-tabing between them. same instance of solidoworks, one part works properly, one does not.

weird, huh?

Does it make a difference if you toggle "View -> Display -> Perspective"?

I asked the initial questions to rule out that some special settings (together with something specific connected to the file) affect this issue. As only some files are affected it seems as they are, in a specific way, different from the others, and it may be that the issue only occurs under specific conditions.

This may be connected to settings which affect the calculation of the movement. Maybe it is connected to hidden/suppressed items in the affected files?

What happens if you insert an affected Assembly into a new Assembly?

I haven't made an assembly that has the problem yet, only a part.
when it is put into an assembly, it behaves.
There are no suppressed entities on the part...

I've posted a file that this happens on

http://www.ericfeldman.com/case2.sldprt

please let me know if you are able to reproduce the results. Try moving the cap up and down and in and out, and at some point (shouldn't take long), the part should fly in the wrong direction, out of control, right off the screen.

I can see the issue. As a workaround I mapped "3Dcontrol Views -> Isometric 1" to a button. After pressing this button one time the issue seems to disappear. Can you confirm that workaround?

Hey, that worked!

Looks like i have to hit that button each time i open the file, but not a huge deal.

any idea why this is happening/will it be fixable in a future update?

We will have to wait until the developers had a look at this issue - but I suspect that it's feasible to fix it.

You can also save the part after hitting ISO 1, then the movement will be fine for this part. It seems as the information saved for this file is not correct - how have you created this part?
