3ds Max 2010 driver lags with Backface Culling + Edged Faces

This behavior only seems to happen in 3ds Max 2010 with the newest 3DConnexion driver. When you have a lot of polys in a scene and have them all displayed with Backface Culling enabled, the viewport performance is terrible when navigating with the SpaceExplorer. The navigation is fine if I use the regular keyboard + mouse combo, but for whatever reason the SpaceExplorer causes a big slow-down.

I have reproduced this scenario and got good results in Maya 2009 (Current driver) and 3ds Max 2009 (previous driver). This problem seems specific to 3ds Max 2010.

Try this…

(1) Create a sphere with 200 segments
(2) Convert to Editable Poly
(3) Go to “Polygon” sub-object level and delete about a third of the polys just by window-selecting and hitting [Delete]
(4) Go back to the object level and make 8 copies of the mesh
(5) Select all of them and use the “Display Floater” to enable Backface Culling and also, in the viewport, enable “Edged Faces” display mode and notice the viewport lag when using the SpaceExplorer and then notice how there is no lag when using the mouse + keyboard navigation.

My system should be able to handle this no problem, as it does with Maya 2009 but not 3ds Max 2010.

Hi Valen,

this thing is in progress from 3d connexion. The problem is known and can be reproduced. Have a look here: viewtopic.php?t=2799&start=75

3dsmax 2009 is also affected..after some minutes working fine.

Ok cool, I'm glad it is in progress. Sorry, I didn't check that previous post because I thought people would start a new topic for it.
