SpaceNavigator flaking finish

I have anew Space Navigator, which is already looking old after 3 weeks. It replaced a SapceBall 5000 which I had for a long time. I wonder why the main touch point of the new controller is soft touch paint and not real rubber/soft polymer? Are the higher models rubber, or the same soft touch paint? Does any one know if there will be changes on the next products.

My desktop is getting paint flakes all over it
