How to use old device like Space Traveler with Windows 10

Post by mckoz »

I had to make the move from 8.1 to Windows 10 because of moving to the Surface Book and figure out how to take my old faithlful Space Traveler with me for Solidworks and Fusion 360. I had used an old post plus some hacks to make this work on 8.1 and since I'm now on 10, I figure some of you might find this useful. It should work with most all of the older devices and with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10, however NO GUARANTEES. Good luck and hope it works for you.

Installation instructions for Windows 10

- 1. Download required Software
- - 1. Download Version 2.8.2 of Driver
- - - 1. Go to http://www.3dconnexion.com/service/arch ... ivers.html
- - - 2. For Product, choose CadMan
- - - 3. For OS, Choose 64 bit XP
- - - 4. Download: 3DxSoftware64 Windows XP 64bit Version 2.8.2
- - 2. Download next driver
- - - 1. Go to http://www.3dconnexion.com/service/drivers.html
- - - 2. or download this latest 64 bit driver pack (currently 10.4.7): http://www.3dconnexion.com/index.php?eI ... _r2465.exe
- - - 3. Download and install 7-Zip
- 2. Extract both packages to their own directories
- - 1. Right-click each downloaded driver package, and use 7-Zip to expand them
- - 2. Now, go into the expanded directory 2.82, and drill down to: \3DxSoftware64_v2-8-2\components64\3DxWare
- - 3. Make sure to have your older 3D device plugged in
- - 4. Double click on setup
- - 5. Select custom (so it doesn't hang on you), and feel free to change the languages.
- - 6. After install, wait for the driver to load in your taskbar
- - 7. Reboot
- - 8. If your device lights up after windows is finished loading skip the next step
- - 9. Troubleshooting. The only thing I've found to mess this up is an old 3DConnexion driver setup. If you have one:
- - - 1. Uninstall all 3DConnexion products
- - - 2. Use Regedit to delete all entries
- - - 3. Delete the folders in program files (both program file directories)
- - - 4. Reboot and start over
- - 10. Go into the other driver package, right click on 3DxWare64 and extract it
- - - 1. For Solidworks, go into: \3DxWare64_v10-4-7_r2465\3DxWare64\components64\3DxSolidWorks and run the 3DxSolidWorks64.msi file
- - - 2. Reboot
- - - 3. Should be done!

Cheers, David

Can't seem to get this method to work with Inventor. It worked with AutoCAD and all ok but inventor I get no use of the spacetraveller3 after installing the inventor component.

Anyone got around this

Is it better to use the older 2.8.2 versus the 3.7 released for Vista, for the SpaceTraveler?

I am trying to get my SpaceTraveller to work with Fusion 360. I've followed the steps above exactly including trying deleting with regedit and trying again.

i've tried all of the different .msi files in the final step as there isn't a specific fusion 360 one.

my SpaceTraveller lights up but doesn't respond to any input except button 4 bringing up the 3dxware panel

Any suggestions gratefully received!

In case anyone is wondering. I just did this with a space traveller on windows 10. I used the 3.7 cadware driver for XP/Vista 64 and the newest SOLIDWORKS driver. Everything works as expected in SOLIDWORKS. I did not have as much luck in other programs.
