Top Workaround! Thumbs up!

this is an experimental 2.58 version with Space Mouse support. I tried it out with my SPP, and it works quite well. The movement is smooth. X- and z-axis are disabled by default, but can be activated by going into fly mode (shift f, mouse over viewport. Esc to leave fly mode).
The buttons of the right side of the SPP are pre-assigned (Application Use), I did not figure out yet how to assign the rest. The Menu button is pre-assigned to 3D Mouse setting in Blender, although I did not see any change when I checked those checkboxes. There was some hickup in the movement which went away after I created a Blender profile.
I think this is a great day. I simply refused to learn 2.5 because I couldn't use my 3dx devices. I'm spoiled by this luxury. Now I can start catching up what I have missed in the last 2 years.

Hi Phil,
You can also right-click on an object and press the "Fit" button on your 3D Mouse. You will then rotate around that object.
Panning can be activated by pressing the "Shift" button during motion.
The buttons can be mapped like assigning keyboard shortcuts in Blender:
User preferences -> Input
Please note that the Blender community is currently still working on the implementation.
