SpacePilot - 3dsMax Design 2009 x64 - FX3700 - flicker probl

Post by Nosdrovni »

hi all,

I have a viewport flicker problem using the spacepilot in max, this is my configuration:

- system: Dell T7400, dual E5430, 8 gig, QUADRO FX3700
- software: 3dstudio max design 2009
- drivers: DirectX 10.0, NVIDIA v 169.61, 3DxWare for Windows version 6.6.1

When I do:

- I draw a teapot in max (I know)
- I maximize the perspective viewport (no problem if I leave the 4 viewports as they are and just move around the small perspective view)
- I use the spacepilot to move around

Then everything works fine and *extremely* smooth, but when I stop moving the spacepilot:

- the screen gets refreshed and I get a 1/2, maybe 1 second anoying flicker, where I can shortly see all 4 viewports and everything gets redrawn.

This happens every time I stop moving the spacepilot.

I tested this using:

- 3dsmax 2009 x64, directx 10 -> same problem
- 3dsmax 2009 x32, directx 10 -> same problem
- 3dsmax 2009 x64, directx 9 -> same problem
- 3dsmax 2009 x32, directx 9 -> same problem
- 3dsmax 2009 x64, opengl -> same problem
- 3dsmax 2009 x32, opengl -> same problem
- 3dsmax 2009 x32, software mode -> NO problem (!)
- (I can not choose software mode in max x64)

It might seem like a small problem but it makes the spacepilot unusable for me since the flicker is very noticable.

I hope there is a solution for this,

regards,
Dennis

Hi Nosdrovni,

We can reproduce the issue. For a workaround until we have a solution I suggest you stay in the 4 window view and maximize the window you need to work in there, by dragging a window corner

Hi Markus,

thank you for the fast reply. I'm very happy you can reproduce the issue. Thank you for the workaround suggestion, this will be fine until the issue is fixed. Will the fix be included in the next version of the driver or is it too early to say?

Let me take the time to say I've never bought any other input device that increased productivity in 3dsmax as much as the SpacePilot does, it is really an awesome tool!

kind regards,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Glad you like your 3d mouse.

Sorry, but I doubt that this will make the next release.

Flicker in 3dsmax 2009

Post by Christoph Dietz »

hi mbonk,
for me, this flickering only happens in perspective view, after setting a standard cam (and using it), it is solved...strange behavior...

When will this be addressed? I just bought an expensive paperwieght. Interestingly enough. After uninstalling the drivers and space ball, the stability of Max increased a lot! 2009 was rather unstable with it. Comming back from sleep mode and using the navigator would cause unexpected errors. Must were completly unreproduceable. Can you get your software approved by Autodesk? It after all "was" a nice idea.

just noticed this thread
don't have this issue on xp so this must be a vista-only or vista+nvidia episode.

Are you running 3ds Max 2009: this is the only version I have seen this issue - but we do have Vista (x64) and NVidia?

yes i use max 2009 on xp and ati card.
no flicker and the device doesn't seem to cause max crashes or stability issues. so probably it's vista related.

An update: 3Dconnexion released an update to the Windows software. 3DxSoftware v. 3.6.7 includes a change to the 3ds Max 2009 plug-in that should address reported in this thread.

You may download the software here.

We appreciate if customers using 3ds Max 2009 on Windows Vista can post here the result of using the new update.
