3ds Max 2014 .. not working .. at all.

Post by QuantumQQ »

Well... The title explains it all..
Inventor 2014 works fine but Max 2014 doesn't work at all.. I get the start up screen popup for the device but no movement goes through (of SpaceNav.).
Nav's button's work but that about all. I used to love this thing, but now it is being more Aesthetic as it's failing to work.

Dear QuantumQQ,

When you have your application open
open the 3Dconnexion Control Panel
and Check under the Advanced Setting Tab to make sure you have all your motions enabled.

Sincerely,
Bryan

Hello QuantumQQ,

make sure you start 3dsmax and the driverwith the same privilegies. If you start 3dsmax as administrator and the driver is running as a different user then both processes cannot communicate.

Ah ha.. The privileges was the culprit.
Guess I will have to not let 3ds max run as admin anymore..

Can you say why you're running Max as admin? Perhaps you had to do so for an older version of the application?

The reason I'm asking if because we've seen other customers taking the same approach as you have and we're trying to collect some information on that.

This is the reason for running in Admin,

Some of the plugins that we are using, namely FumeFX (which is notorious) throws stupid warnings (2) about not being able to write global settings to an .ini file. FumeFX is one of the most popular plugins out there for destruction/smoke/particle/fire effects. In many cases plugins won't even run if not in admin mode, thank god that has been getting much better.

So what's the big deal?
Well, if I add my computer to my home render farm, then I have to close my work, set my local shortcut to admin, fire it up, and then send the job. This is because when I send something off to a farm, if there is an error with one of the max copies, it doesn't complain and it jams up that computer and nothing will render on it. I'm not super savy with farm administration, I prefer to just send the job and let the machines decide what gets sent where...

I already have to deal with random crashes, I don't feel like seeing warnings when I startup or the hoop jumping as above...
Plus I also believe max just plain runs better in admin. Might just be in my head, but why deny me that delusion?

You guys design these innovative systems.. what do you think of such situations?

Hi QuantumQQ,

Thanks for the explanation: it's clear why you need to run as admin. I see no other alternative (until all software that you use works sensibly).

If you need to run 3dsmax as admin you need to run the C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxWare64\3dxsrv.exe as admin as well. That seems to have solved it for me!
