Random NX crash
Running NX 9, SpaceExplorer and a CadMouse, with the 10.2.9 3Dconnexion driver. SpaceExplorer firmware ver. 3.18
Another user has the 10.2.6 driver version. and no CadMouse.
Other users, with similar workstations without the CadMouse are having the same random crash. You will be zoom/pan/rotating with the SpaceExplorer and *poof* NX has stopped working and it departs. No pattern that we have noticed.
IT has looked at the event viewer, with no insight. We have gone thru the workstations making sure the video driver is the latest certified by Siemens.
Thoughts?

Re: Random NX crash
Hi Dave,
have you tried if the crash happens as well if the driver for the 3D mouse (and CadMouse) is not installed? I know it is difficult to work without 3D mouse, but you should give it a try.

Re: Random NX crash
I may give that a try...I'm not sure which will cause a larger productivity loss, random crashes, or now 3D motion controller

Re: Random NX crash
If NX crashes, Siemens should be able to help. Certainly they collect information when their application crashes. If it is related to the 3D device, they will know and will contact us.
Re: Random NX crash
I grabbed all the logs for them awhile back, IR 7536666, so I switched to the latest certified video driver. I was good for about a month, then 3 of us had crashes in one day, which led me here, to see if anyone else noticed behavior like this.jwick wrote:If NX crashes, Siemens should be able to help. That said, I am prepared to grab the syslogs again for Siemens, but of course now that I'm ready, NX won't do it...Murphy and that law of his.

Re: Random NX crash
@jwick
NX continues to crash randomly for myself, and another user. Speaking only for myself, it always seems to be when moving the Space Explorer, this morning I was only rotating my model, when NX stopped working. I have supplied log files to Siemens, and they have not found anything in the logs, the crash is so fast, nothing of importance is being written. I'm very close to having an "Office Space" type event with this SpaceExplorer
I've swapped to a SpaceNavigator, hoping to narrow this down.

Re: Random NX crash
That sounds strange that they wouldn't have a minidump.
Can you put us in contact with the person who was handling the support request at Siemens?
We may be able to walk that back to the developers.
In the meantime, if you haven't already tried, you can uninstall our add-in for NX to see if that makes any difference. I don't think it is used much for the SE. What's left is completely enclosed inside NX.

Re: Random NX crash
OK, SpaceNavigator did NOT help, NX crashed again. I'm starting to think this is OS, or hardware related, 3 users have all had random NX crashes. The first crash you get a message, "NX has stopped working" after that, just *poof* gone.

What do I have to do to remove the 3Dconnexion plug-in?

Re: Random NX crash
To remove the NX plugin, you should be able to run the 3DxWare installer and unselect the NX plugin.
There may be other ways, like something in NX, but I'm not familiar with that.

Crashed again. This time I had Process Manager logging, so I'm hoping our IT people might be able to gleen something from it.

Re: Random NX crash
I believe we have finally solved it. It seems the Nvidia driver was the culprit, even though it was "certified" by siemens. I have gone to the newest driver, which I am told is also "certified", but not yet listed on the certified drivers list. Since then, no crashes in almost 2 weeks. New driver is being deployed to all users.

Re: Random NX crash
Hi drkieffer,
With what graphics card you had the problem? And which driver version do you use?

Re: Random NX crash
nvidia K4200, K4000, and M5000, which are all Quadro cards.
Driver version 354.56 is what the solution was.
