Hmm, I was actually hoping it would continue to crash and we'd have more information on the crash. Right now what this tells me is PS is not processing keyboard events correctly and it's not a plug-in issue per-se.
I'll try another experiment and send it to you.

In your current configuration of zooming by pulling up or pushing down on the cap, you should be able to adjust the brush size by turning the cap clockwise or counter-clockwise like a door knob.
Be sure to select a brush type of tool. You should see the brush size change value on the Option toolbar.
