Have him bring up the 3dcontrol panel.
then click on help and about.

What firmware is he running?
Does it say 3.2?

Next have him try clicking on the calibrate button.
Then check and see if the device is still moving on its own.

This may help:

Go to the control panel,
open up system
Hardware
Device Manager
Locate your Usb Root Hub
right click and select properties
click on power Management
You can unselect allow the computer to turn off the device to save power.

Try creating a firewall rule and add 3dxsrv.exe to the list.

click start,
ctrl panel
network connection
right click local area connection
select advanced
settings
click on exceptions
add,
browse
go to C:
program files
3dconnexion
3dconnexion software
3dxware
select 3dxsrv.exe

click ok 3 times

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package
After installing run the cleanup tool.
Look for [] with no name.
delete.

Then go to our website and download the latest driver.
