Problem solved!
The daemon had a non root user id (500) and the sticky bit set. So regardless of the user who started the application it got the non root user permission and hence failed to start!

Could not open USB port on RH EL 5.5 (32 bits)
After installing 3dxware 1.5.2 (32 bits) for my SpaceNavigator on Red Hat EL 5.5 (32 bits) it fails to start the driver (see log file below).
