I'm also experiencing this problem. 3ds max 9 & SpaceBall (seems this is not device-dependent). Previous posts describe the issue pretty well.

update: I have now installed 3ds max 9 32-bit on the same workstation as my 64-bit setup. 3DxWare and 3DxStudio9 work as they should... First, good news! I might get some work done! :) Secondly, it might suggest there's nothing wrong with the installer. I think. But I'm just speculating. Please fix ...
