3Dconnexion Brings Intelligent 3D Navigation to Autodesk 3ds Max Artists and Designers

3D Mice Automatically Follow Point of Interest to Bring “Extreme” Design Control and Interaction to...

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – July 27, 2010 – 3Dconnexion's newest driver update for Autodesk® 3ds Max® brings intelligent 3D navigation to the design process, delivering the ultimate level of control to game developers, visual effects artists and graphic designers.

Whether working with larger models or focusing on intricate details in a 3D environment, 3Dconnexion’s intelligent 3D navigation feature automatically follows the point of interest to continuously determine the optimal center of rotation. In addition, the center of rotation can be seen at all times through an icon to give designers a reference point when controlling spin, tilt, and roll motion, resulting in an extremely intuitive 3D navigation experience.

“Our innovative intelligent 3D navigation feature provides a new level of control over the point of interest in 3D designs” said Dieter Neujahr, president of 3Dconnexion. “By automatically establishing and displaying the optimal center of rotation, designers are free to focus more on the creative elements of their designs without having to think about navigating or positioning their model."

To meet a range of design needs, there are two modes of setting the center of rotation. The new Auto Rotation Center sets the center of rotation to a point on the model that is nearest to the display screen center, which is particularly useful for use at higher zoom levels. For additional control, designers can also easily pick a new center of rotation point on the 3D model to suit their individual design task.

In addition to intelligent 3D navigation, the latest driver update also streamlines the 3Dconnexion 3D mouse user interface within 3ds Max. By using the Menu or Panel button on the 3D mouse, a pop-up menu is activated to centralize all 3D mouse related options into one location. The new pop-up menu simplifies the interface by grouping functions and hiding details the designer may not be interested in. The new menu also minimizes screen clutter and provides designers with a clearer view of their design.

3Dconnexion will be demonstrating the new intelligent navigation feature in Booth 1147 at SIGGRAPH 2010 in Los Angeles, Calif., July 27–29.

Availability
These new features are available now in a free 3DxWare software update, and support Autodesk 3ds Max 2009 to 2011 on Windows® XP, Windows Vista®, and Windows 7 across the entire product line. The 3Dconnexion product line includes the Professional Series with the SpacePilot PRO (MSRP $399) and SpaceExplorer™ (MSRP $299), and the Standard Series with the SpaceNavigator (MSRP $99) and SpaceNavigator for Notebooks (MSRP $129).

About 3Dconnexion, a Logitech Company
3Dconnexion, a wholly owned subsidiary of Logitech (SIX: LOGN) (Nasdaq: LOGI), is the leading provider of 3D mice for 3D design and visualization. 3Dconnexion devices support today’s most popular and powerful 3D applications by offering users a more intuitive and natural way to interact with computer-generated 3D content. 3Dconnexion’s award-winning 3D mice serve a wide variety of industries and are used by 3D designers, animators and artists worldwide. 3Dconnexion is headquartered in Fremont, Calif. with European headquarters in Munich, Germany and offices worldwide.
SpacePilot PRO 3D Mice Drive Design of 800 MPH North American Eagle

Fremont, Calif. – Feb. 16, 2010 – 3Dconnexion today announced it has become an official sponsor of the North American Eagle™ Land Speed program. Project designers will be using the 3Dconnexion SpacePilot™ PRO 3D mouse in conjunction with Lenovo ThinkStations and ThinkPads, and Dassault Systèmes CATIA V5 and Geomagic Software to design parts and assemblies for the 56-foot long Eagle car. The goal of the North American Eagle program is to break the current world land speed record of 763 mph (1,228 kmh), set on October 15, 1997, by reaching 800 mph (1,287 kmh).

“Designing an earth-bound vehicle that can travel at supersonic speeds demands an extraordinary team of designers equipped with the ultimate tools, and the 3Dconnexion SpacePilot PRO is powering the design team to new levels of performance and productivity,” said Keith Zanghi, co-owner and director of operations, North American Eagle. “The superior 3D navigation and application control it makes possible, makes it a crucial part of our goal to set a new world land speed record.”

“The ability to perform multiple functions at once and the ease of manipulation allows me to spend more time designing," says Don Mitchell, chief designer and programmer, North American Eagle. "Frankly, I have been using 3Dconnexion products so long I would be lost without it."

3Dconnexion 3D mice deliver a level of control that is not possible with a traditional mouse and keyboard. Users engage both hands in a balanced and cooperative work style with one hand using the 3D mouse to position the model, while the other hand simultaneously uses the traditional mouse to select, create or edit. By spreading the workload across both hands, users experience productivity increases of more than 20% as well as a more comfortable working experience by reducing traditional mouse clicks by up to 50%.

“Being part of the North American Eagle’s quest to break the world land speed record is thrilling,” said Dieter Neujahr, president of 3Dconnexion. “SpacePilot PRO is the most advanced 3D mouse ever, and it will enable the team to design the fastest and safest land vehicle in the fastest amount of time.”

About the North American Eagle Land Speed Program
The purpose of the North American Eagle™ Land Speed Program is to test the capability of a land based vehicle to safely transition through supersonic speed. The by-products of this challenge have the potential to impact high-speed rail, ground effects of high-speed aircraft in the landing configuration as well as deceleration methods utilized by high-speed vehicles.
For additional information about the North American Eagle land speed project, please visit www.landspeed.com.

3Dconnexion is headquartered in Fremont, Calif. with European headquarters in Seefeld, Germany and offices worldwide. With this new feature, 3Dconnexion 3D mice can now automatically follow a designer’s point of interest and continuously determine the optimal center of rotation, enabling an easier and more intuitive exploration of the largest models and the smallest details. In addition, the center of rotation can now be seen at all times via an icon, further enhancing the navigation experience.

3Dconnexion will be demonstrating the new intelligent navigation feature in Booth 201 at SolidWorks World in Anaheim, Calif., Jan. 31 – Feb. 3, 2010.

“Previously, SolidWorks users had to zoom in fairly close and manually select a new center of rotation. We have listened to the feedback of our customers to provide designers with total control over the point of interest,” said Dieter Neujahr, president of 3Dconnexion. “By automatically establishing and displaying the optimal center of rotation, designers are now free to focus on design creativity and flexibility when using 3D mice in SolidWorks.”

When using the new update, two modes of setting the center of rotation are available. The new Auto Rotation Center sets the center of rotation to a point on the model that is nearest to the display screen center, particularly useful for use at higher zoom levels. For additional control, users can easily pick a new center of rotation point on the 3D model to suit the design task.

Availability
The new feature will be available in late February via a free 3DxWare software update, and will support SolidWorks 2005 – 2010 on Windows® XP, Windows Vista®, and Windows 7 across the entire product line. The 3Dconnexion product line includes the Professional Series with the new SpacePilot PRO (MSRP $399), SpacePilot™ (MSRP $299 with promotion) and SpaceExplorer™ (MSRP $299), and the Standard Series with the SpaceNavigator (MSRP $99) and SpaceNavigator for Notebooks (MSRP $129).
