Before I tell about my findings / issues with the SpaceExplorer use in a First Person Shooter, let me thank you for the 3DxWare 10 driver! I always loved these intuitive controllers and thought it was a pity to not have a driver that can do free axis and keyboard mapping. Now it is there, so thank you.
Now for the issue: I am trying to use the SpaceExplorer in Crysis 2. I generated a new profile and used the Keyboard (W,A,S,D) template to do that. I did some remappings but I think basically I did not change anything essential. I just swapped Pan left / right and spin and assigned space and C to Pan up / down.
Here is what I observed (finally): When I intend to run in Crysis 2 I would normally press W and SHIFT on the keyboard simultaneously. I tested it with the keyboard and it dows not matter whether I press SHIFT first and hold and press W second or the other way around I will always start running. Now if I press the shift key on the SpaceExplorer and Zoome our aka push forward it will only work in that sequence. SHIFT first then push forward. If I try to start running while already walking it will not function. Also when I release SHIFT and Zoom it happens from time to time that I keep walking unintentionally. But I could not reproduce the circumstances very well yet. Maybe the two are related. Finally in Crysis 2 if you press SPACE you do an ordinary jump. If you press and hold space you do sort of a way more powerfull jump. Works fine with my keyboard. I assigned that to Pan up as mentioned earlier but find it to be unreliable. When I pull up and hold sometimes it triggers the high jump sometimes it doesn't. Also it is almost impossible when jumping to move forward at the same time. Or is that by design because of the dominant mode?
My setup: SpaceExplorer Firmware 4.4, Win7 64-bit, 3DxWare 10.0.9
Will be thankful for any tips.
