Failing to get Navigator to do Jog/Shuttle-Adobe Premiere

Postby mattolejack » Thu Apr 21, 2011 2:19 pm

This thing would make a great jog/shuttle dial in Premiere if I could figure out how to make the keyboard mappings work. The fact that it springs back to 'center' position after being twisted or pushed is exactly the right action for jog and shuttle dials.

So I have tried mapping it as follows:

<<Shuttle>> - Shift-J and Shift-L, mapped to when you tip the stick to the left or right. Doesn't work, as described below.

Meanwhile <<Jog>> seems to have no keyboard mapping possibilities at all; there's no simple way to access the command with the Navigator. Should be mapped to twisting/rotating the stick to the left or right.

The shuttle mappings don't work because there doesn't seem to be any way of having the Navigator stop issuing the command once it springs back to the middle point. The driver should perhaps have an option to issue a second keyboard command when an action is reversed, ie <<push>> issues Shift-J, but then <return>> issues something else.

I have no idea how to go about issuing a <<jog>> command to Premiere.

Anyway these are my first somewhat disorganized thoughts on trying to make Premiere work with the awesome new driver.

Some working settings

I've got the Navigator working pretty well as a jog/shuttle dial in Premiere now, with a combination of Keyboard and 2D Mouse settings.

I've still got the first Axis (Push Left/Right) set to emulate the Shuttle Function. It's mapped (KEYBOARD), (Shift-L) and (Shift-J). I am still playing with the settings on this one, since it doesn't work as smoothly as I would like, and also, once you start shuttling with the Navigator, it will keep shuttling until you give a new command; in other words you need to twist the knob or something to make it stop shuttling. So functionally I don't really use this axis much and I have a replacement mapped on a different axis below; however I am keeping it active since I still think I will be able to find a setting that works for shuttle.

The second Axis (Push Forward/Backward) is disabled.

The third Axis (Pull Up/Push Down) is mapped (KEYBOARD) (-) and (=), which zooms the timeline in and out.

The fourth Axis (Tilt Forward/Backward) is disabled.

The fifth Axis (Tilt Left/Tilt Right) is mapped to (KEYBOARD) (Shift-Left Arrow, Shift-Right Arrow). This steps forward/backward five frames in the timeline of any window, and works pretty well as a Shuttle replacement, actually.

The sixth Axis (Twist Left/Twist Right) is mapped to (2D MOUSE) and emulates the (Mouse Wheel) function, which works as a jog wheel. This provides excellent fine control for frame-by-frame forward backward nudges.
