Roll and Spin Axes switched in Inventor

Postby rheldt » Fri Jun 29, 2007 9:06 am

I'm just getting started with a new Navigator to use with Inventor. Everything was workng fine until I realized that somewhere along the way the roll and spin axes switched. When I go to the control panel, it shows "roll" next to the picture of twisting the knob and "spin" next to the left/right tilt.
I can't find any way to switch it back.
If I exit and restart Inventor, it corrects itself for a while, and then I find twisting the knob rolls the model again.
I uninstalled the software and re-downloaded the latest from the website, but still the same thing.

Anyone else see this?

Hi rheldt,

Make sure Inventor is the foreground application, open the driver control panel (3DxWare) and check the "Zoom Direction" selection on the "Device Configuration": it should be set to the option on the right (zoom along forward/backward direction).

You can also reset the configuration for Inventor. On the driver control panel, go to the menu "Options" and select "Restore All Defaults..." Again, you need to make sure Inventor is running and was the foreground application before opening the panel.

Ah. That seems to do it. I had it set so up/down on the knob was assigned to the zoom.
Now I see that as soon as I do that, the spin and roll axes swap.
Doesn't make sense to me why, but at least I understand what's causing it.
Is this considered a "feature"? It isn't apparent in any of the documentation that changing the zoom direction also changes the spin and roll...

thanks for the help

Hi rheldt,
Is this considered a "feature"?
Very much so, yes.

It isn't apparent in any of the documentation that changing the zoom direction also changes the spin and roll...
By definition, "spin" and "roll" are, respectively, the rotations around the "Pan Up/Down" and "Zoom" directions. If you change the "Zoom Direction" then the rotations around are also changed.
