Drivers won't start - 20/03/12

Postby mattcscz » Tue Mar 20, 2012 9:02 am

Hi guys,

Over the past couple of days my drivers have been reluctant to start, I updated some other drivers like Nvidia, razer and Wacom. Has anyone else had this problem?

When I run "3dxsrv.exe" publisher: "Unkown" and when I run (as admin) nothing happens after the prompt, it's not running in my task manager either.

Thanks.

Things I've tried:

Uninstall/reinstall
Running an older version from cached windows folders
Running repair

Drivers won't start

Postby Barbara » Tue Mar 20, 2012 9:32 am

Hi mattcscz -

The software needs the device to be recognized in order to start.

Try re-starting it holding down both buttons while you are plugging it in.
Hold button #1 and button #2 down on your device .
While holding the buttons, plug in the device.Wait about 15 seconds, release the 2 buttons then start the driver.

Also make sure it is plugged directly into a USB port. If you are using a laptop, have the AC adapter plugged in.

This is usually enough to allow it to restart. If not, try unplugging USB devices other than mouse and keyboard and check whether it is shown as an unrecognized device in Device Manager. If it is, remove that and let windows recognize it again.

Reinstall it
Or delete all the drivers with system cache then reinstall it.

Hi mattcscz -

After you see 'Initializing...' , are you able to run the Jet Demo ? [Start, All Programs, 3Dconnexion, Demo- Jet Demo]

3dxsrv.exe should be in the Processes list in Task Manager.

If it is not, you can use the clean install steps to correct the problem. This is different than uninstalling/reinstalling the 3Dconnexion software, since the 3Dconnexion registry keys and profiles are not removed in a standard re-install.

It is possible that the driver is being blocked by a security application. Updates can sometimes revert permissions. An exception for the executable - 3dxsrv.exe - or an additional level of permissions may be needed depending on the security applications used.

If you are still not able to start the driver, please contact our helpdesk.

The jet demo opens for about .1 of a second, then shuts. I can't remember, but where can I back up my profile before doing the clean install as I really really really really really really reallyreally really don't want to set it up again...

Thanks

Hi Mattcscz -

Since the Jet Demo does not remain open, that indicates the device is either not being recognized or the driver is not being allowed to start.

More important than a clean install at this point is for the Space Pilot PRO to be recognized. Is it plugged directly into a USB port on the PC ? Have you been able to try it on another PC? Is this a personal PC where you can disconnect from the internet and temporarily turn off security/ firewall applications ?

To answer your question about profiles, the 3Dconnexion profiles are saved as .scg files. Some of the applications also store button mapping information in the registry locations listed in the clean install steps.

In Windows 7 the .scg files are in
C: --> Users --> [Username] --> AppData -->Roaming---> 3Dconnexion --> 3DxWare --> profiles

To find out which .scg file your application is using, hover over the 3Dx SystemTray icon with your standard mouse while the application has the device focus. The profile name is listed along with the .scg filename in parenthesis - i.e Maya-username(user05.scg)

In regedit you can use Export to save entries to a .reg file before deleting them. Once you have completed the clean install and have verified that your Space Pilot PRO buttons are working correctly , you can right-click on the .reg file and use Merge to restore it.

If restoring a profile re-introduces the problem, you will have identified the source and can remove it again.

As always Microsoft recommends a of your backup your registry before making any changes.

In a case of hardware failure we typically do not see the 'Initializing...' message. Check that the executable - 3dxsrv.exe - has permission to run in any security/firewall application.

If you are still not able to start the driver, our technical support can help with individually looking at the things that could be blocking it.
