Terrible lag in Maya 2012 with Space Explorer on Mac 10.6.8.

Postby soview » Thu Mar 01, 2012 9:33 pm

I purchased a Space Explorer a few months ago to improve my workflow in Maya 2012, and for the first couple of weeks it worked great and I did not experience any problems. Everything seemed to work great until I regretfully downloaded and installed Maya Bonus Tools from Autodesk's A.R.E.A. site. This free add-on has been nothing but trouble from the get go. The 3dConnexion control panel vanished and my space explorer completely stopped working in Maya. After many uninstalls and reinstalls of both Maya and 3dConnexion drivers I was finally able to get the 3d mouse to work. But I still have to type "MagellanStartup" every time I start Maya and now after working fine for a week or too I now have this horrible lag and delay with Space Explorer which makes it unusable. I have been running 10.4 Beta so switched and tried older drivers as well and the problem remains. I have deleted everything in my libraries and on my hard drive involving Maya and 3dconnexion and done fresh installs of both and the problem still comes back. Any advice? BTY I understand that ya'll can't offer support for Beta software but how about some instructions for the "Any Application" scripts especially importing new ones. Yes I can use the mouse in any application after I sit there for hours tweaking knobs. Thanks

Hi soview,

the Bonus Tools are installing their own usersetup.mel and this might overwrite the one that launches the MagellanStartup.

To have the 3DxMaya plug-in auto-start, you will need to add the 'MagellanStartup;' line to the end of the active 'usersetup.mel'

You can locate any other copies of 'usersetup.mel' you have, using 'Finder'. If you have other scripts or add-ins such as Maya's Bonus Tools or GoZ , they add their own 'usersetup.mel' files. Open the 'usersetup.mel' in maya|scripts|startup and add the line 'MagellanStartup;' at the end.

Ok, i tried that and every time I would try and save the changes Maya would crash. But I uninstalled everything again and reinstalled and it loads but after a couple of minutes the delayed mouse activity returns. If I make a few turns in different directions I have to sit there and wait for it to complete the slow motion activity. I went ahead and returned my button assignments to default thinking that it might be conflicting the sensitivity buttons but no changes. Please help, I've tried everything.

Hi soview,

can you just unload the Bonus Tools and see if the performance is better then?

Do you have other tools installed that might interfere? Try unloading it and see if it improves. This is to see what is causing the problems.

Ok, I figured it out. After deleting everything Maya and 3dConnexion related and several fresh installs, I realized the problem or problems. Maya Bonus Tools as well as Maya 2012 SP2 (Service Pack 2) are not compatible with any 3dConnexion drivers for the Space Explorer USB on Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I can only say this for sure with my particular situation but if you are experiencing similar problems then give it a shot, Thanks
