How do I dolly in camera view with the Navigator?

Postby cwm9 » Mon Jan 30, 2012 10:21 pm

When I use the Navigator in 3ds max while looking at a (3dsmax) camera view, I seem to only be able to zoom the camera lens and am unable to dolly the camera despite having (3dconnexion) camera mode selected.

How do I switch to dolly mode?

It works just fine in perspective mode.

Thanks!

How do I dolly in camera view with the Navigator?

Hi cwm9 -

In the Advanced section of the 3Dconnexion pop-up menu there are options 'Only move 3d view' and 'Move objects'. With 'Move objects' checked you can dolly the camera using the Space Navigator.

Hi, Barbra.

This doesn't seem to work for me.

I click on the view type selector, choose the Camera.

I then use the list selector to select the camera.

I have object move turned on.

No matter which camera mode I select, the camera does not move or tilt at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I discovered if I make a new camera, it behaves normally. So maybe a better question would be, how would I get the camera to zoom in by pushing forward and pulling back?

Hello cwm9 -

You can change the zoom direction in the 3Dconnexion Properties window.

When you have 3DsMax open then open the 3Dconnexion Properties window, your 3DsMax profile should be the active one - the profile name will be at the top of the window. You can select the in and out zoom on the Device Configuration tab. This also swaps roll and spin.

I'm not sure why your initial camera is not moving. When I try to recreate that I can choose a camera from the list and have it move as you would expect it to. Does it only happen with that particular camera ?

Yes. The scene was imported form Revit via FBX and the camera is the Revit camera.

Hi cwm9 -

That would explain it. FBX imports the Revit camera but loses its optical center. The 3DsMax camera model doesn't support the Revit optical center so the SpaceNavigator is not recognizing the imported camera.
