Google Chrome Profile

Postby jwick » Fri Apr 01, 2011 12:09 pm

I created a profile for Google Chrome that works pretty well. Try it to see what you think.

I made the following assignments:

Tilt axis (the first rotation axis) assigned to MouseWheel
Roll axis (the next one) assigned to Shift + MouseWheel
Spin axis (the last one) assigned to Ctrl + MouseWheel

I left all the other axes alone.

The Tilt axis scrolls through the page.
The Roll axis pans left and right across the page.
The Spin axis zooms the page.

Took about two minutes.

I am using MouseWheel in the WindowsExplorer profile.

Works very nice for applications such as MS word where I get very smooth scrolling.
In chrome I see very choppy scrolling nevertheless. The scrolling my Performance MX mouse offers ("Fließende Bildläufe aktivieren" in SetPoint) is far superior (3DxWare seems to use 3 line scrolling?).

Profile Ideas

Postby shaker » Sat Apr 02, 2011 12:18 pm

Thanks @jwick for the Google Chrome profile idea.

Question: how come I am not able to assign the buttons to a keystroke or 2D mouse?

To "Fit" in Chrome, try creating a macro called "Control_Zero" which performs the keystrokes "+Ctrl+0" which is the Chrome equivalent of "Fit"

It may also be more comfortable for some users to reverse the vertical scroll in the controller cap assigned to "2D mouse wheel"

Hope this is useful

I'm not getting what you are asking for here. Can you give me an example of what you want to do?

Yes, this works great. Good suggestion.

Yes, all those are good suggestions. Thank you for contributing.

I believe he's asking why it's not an option to assign something like a mouse-click to a button. For example, in Chrome, I'd love to have button 1 on my SpaceExplorer be the left mouse button, but it's not an option.

I forgot to mention that you should use one of the Keyboard templates (e.g., Keyboard (Arrows)) for any application that isn't either a Joystick or native 3D Mouse-aware application. This adds a lot of keyboard and mouse actions to the profile you created.

(I'll even admit that I forgot to do that in my chrome profile.)

On something like a SE, I'd set it up so the left, middle, right mouse are mapped to the L, 2D, R keys. They fall naturally under my left thumb for easy access.

And maybe the T and F would be page forward/backward (previous URL/Next URL), or PageUp/PageDown. I think I setup the IE profile that way.

Really, it's almost unlimited what you can do to customize your 3D mouse, now.

How would you set L&R to be mouse clicks in something like Google Chrome? There's "2D mouse" options. Maybe I'm just missing something? Windows explorer, for example, has "2D mouse" options under the function list, so I could set them as left or right mouse button without a problem, but that list doesn't come up in chrome.

Did you recreate your chrome profile using the Keyboard (Arrows) template?

Are you thinking about adding left mouse button clicks on the device axis or a button?

No, I hadn't changed it to keyboard.

The software has been crashing on me now, so I can't change anything

If 3DxService is crashing it could be because of something you put into a profile. The beta isn't that robust in handling invalid input yet.

Start with a reboot.

Your profiles are stored in %appdata%/3dconnexion/3dxware/cfg. I'd try deleting the most recent, one at a time, until it runs again. The 3DxService.log file would probably say what is going wrong.

If you want to save those profiles, move them somewhere else. If you find the invalid one, you can submit it to us to try to figure out what is wrong with it.

Ok, I've fixed the crash, thanks for that.

What I'm trying to do is make a button (not an axis) into the left mouse button (or middle mouse button, etc.).

The axis works just fine in scrolling the page or zooming, or whatever. Under the "buttons" tab though, if I were to want to set button "L" to the left mouse button, there's no option for "2D mouse" commands the way there is in Windows Explorer.

Those mouse options are just missing from your profile. If you recreate with the right template you will have all of them.

Thanks Marshal & Jwick, it some time for it to sink in - before setting up an application use the right template - the options are 3DMouse, which does not allow you to assign your buttons to 2DMouse button functions, there are other templates - Keyboard (arrows) and Keyboard (WASD), and Joystick, so please be sure to select the correct profile

@Jwick - what is the difference between "Keyboard (Arrows)" and "Keyboard (WASD)", what does 'WASD' mean?

WASD refers to the W, A, S, D keys. This is a very popular way of navigating in first person games. They act like arrow keys for your left hand (presumably your right hand is busy with the 2D mouse). The W key is move forward. A is strafe left. S is move back. D is strafe right.
