3DSmax 7 performance with Space Navigator

Post by Buzzz »

I Have been using the Space Navigator for a few months now and I noticed something strange with 3DSmax 7.

When the number of objects increases, the movements with the Space Navigator become jerky, whereas they remain very fluid while moving with the mouse.

Is there an explanation?
Is there a plan to optimize the drivers to avoid this type of problem.

Maybe my configuration is a bit oudated (Barthon 2500+ & 1Gb of RAM) but I'm surprised to notice so much difference of performance between those two inputs.

Am I the only one to notice that or has it been already addressed earlier?

with the mouse you don't get that many increments. i guess that's why the video card slows if it can't keep up with the poly/object number.

did you try to increase sensitivity at maximum? more like bigger increments.

Do you mean the sensitivity of the navigator?
I increased it, but it didn't change the FPS hit. I will try to max it out.

Hi Buzzz

Did you try with our new release available to download (3DxSoftware v3.3.2)?

I tried to record a movie with fraps to show the problem but it succeded only when I moved with the mouse. When I moved with the space navigator, Fraps was unable to recognize the active directX window.

With the previous driver, when I moved with navigator, the name of the windows switched from "User" to "3DxStudio User" and remained with this name until I finished moving. With the 3.3.2, it is permanently switching between the 2 names (and the buttons in the right bottom corner of max are flashing)

Hi Buzzz

Could you test this issue with another version of 3DS Max as well?

Could you send me a scene with which I could reproduce the problem you described?

I can't test with another version of max because I only have max 7.
I can send you a scene but it behaves the same with each high polycount scene I try.
Using the original driver, that I got with my hardware, I finally succeeded in recording with fraps. The record looks very strange, like if max was constantly switching the render mode.

Below are the links to 2 videos recorded with fraps with an empty scene :
- mouse move : http://buzzz57.free.fr/div/3dsmax%20200 ... -30-60.avi

- navigator move : http://buzzz57.free.fr/div/3dsmax%20200 ... -58-09.avi

Same jerky movement with 3ds Max 9

Post by marcore »

I have to agree with Buzzz, the new 3.3.2 drivers for 3ds max are worse then the previous version, in viewports user/perspective/up/right/left, etc..

But if you make a camera from a viewport(Ctrl+C) the jerk goes away but then again you cant use the Zoom extends....strange

Hi Buzzz

I tried to play the 2 files you sent to me with Windows Media Player. I saw unfortunately only a black, empty surface...

Perhaps could you tell me with which application could I see the videos you recorded.

The videos play fine in WMP for me. Are you sure you downloaded the videos completely?
